Academic Offer

The Spanish department aims to promote the learning of Spanish throughout the school.  In learning Spanish, pupils learn to appreciate the culture and ways of life of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world. Students who opt for Spanish in Year 8 will then continue to study it for the duration of KS3.  Students can then go on to study Spanish to GCSE and A Level. All A Level students have a timetabled period with our Spanish Language Assistant.

Extra-curricular offer

Our Spanish assistant Paula hosts the Spanish lunchtime club every Tuesday at 12.30.

We currently offer after school revision sessions for GCSE students.

In recent years the Spanish Department has taken trips to Barcelona and Madrid.  Our current A Level students have recently completed work experience in our partner school in Madrid and stayed with families and hosted students in return. We are hoping to undertake a homestay trip to Madrid in the coming academic year with one of our partner schools.

What do we do well

We have excellent links with our feeder primary schools delivering Spanish to P6 and P7 pupils.

Inspiring our students to continue in their Spanish journey.  A number of our past pupils are presently studying Spanish at university level in Cambridge, Queens and Swansea  to name but a few and doing their year out in Spanish speaking countries as far away as Chile. Past students who have studied Spanish are now working and using their Spanish in sectors as diverse as Finance and Beauty. A number of our past students have at different times taught Spanish here in Shimna. The flexibility of languages is such that you can choose to study a language with almost any other subject broadening the range of your employability options.
