Saoirse heading east to Oxford

Congratulations to Year 14 student Saoirse Cassidy-Dawson, who yesterday received an offer from Oxford University to read Japanese next year. This is a tremendous achievement and just reward for her hard work, particularly over the course of a gruelling application process.

Saoirse said: “I’m delighted, relieved and very excited! I can’t quite believe I’m going to have the chance to study at one of the top universities in the world. I now have to get the grades but I will give it my best shot.”

“I’m grateful to my teachers at Shimna for their encouragement over the years. Looking back, the requirement of studying languages at GCSE proved to be really important for me. The extra-curricular opportunities organised by the MFL Department also helped along the way. They gave me the chance to explore different cultures, which is what integration should be about.”

Principal Steve Pagan said: “We are tremendously proud of Saoirse. She is a supremely talented student. Alongside her A Levels, Saoirse has been studying the language and culture in her spare time. When she talks about it, her enthusiasm is quite infectious. She is an example of what can be achieved through a love of learning and single-minded determination. Well done, Saoirse.”
