Shimna Geographers voyage to the Land of Fire and Ice
Our Geography students have just arrived back from a trip to Iceland over the half-term break.
Ms Anderson, Head of Subject, writes: “Our trip began in Reykjavík, where students enjoyed an orientation coach tour with highlights including visits to the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church, the striking Harpa Concert Hall, Höfði House and the bustling harbour area. Once we had settled into our Hotel, we ventured out on an evening dander to the city centre where we managed to track down the famous Skólavörðustígur Rainbow Street and engage in some retail therapy. Anyone for Icelandic sea salt?!
On Saturday, the group embarked on the famous Golden Circle Tour, beginning with a visit to the Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant to learn about Iceland's innovative use of renewable energy. We enjoyed a relaxing stop at Iceland’s oldest swimming pool, the Secret Lagoon, which at 38 degrees proved a big hit, with many brave souls even opting for dips in the cold plunge pool. The girls did seem to fare better here than the boys, I have to say!
Our afternoon included exploring the natural wonders of Þingvellir National Park, the spectacular Geysir geothermal area and the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall – not to forget Dara’s regular updates from the Rostrevor match (we’ll say no more about that!) Emily also took the opportunity to put her German skills into practice with our tour guide. Our day finished with an epic 10-round quiz in which our Year 14/11 team emerged victorious, largely thanks to Brady’s flawless flags knowledge!
Sunday's South Coast Tour showcased some of Iceland's most breathtaking scenery, including the impressive Skógafoss waterfall, the dramatic black sands of Víkurfjara Black Beach and unforgettable views of Iceland's rugged coastline. We finished with a mesmerising visit to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall where we were able to venture behind the falls - a TikTokers dream.
Throughout the trip, our students were a credit to themselves, their families and our school. Their behaviour was exceptional and they embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, curiosity and respect, not to mention the selfless efforts of Luke and Josh to boost the Icelandic economy.
The opportunity to explore Iceland's unique geography, history and sustainable energy practices have created memories that will last a lifetime. It was an absolute pleasure to accompany such a wonderful group of students on this incredible adventure.”
