Shimna’s Golden Girls are World Champions!

Six students from Shimna Integrated College have returned with a collection of gold and silver medals from the St Ayles Skiff World Championship, held in Kortgene in the Netherlands. Competing against 54 clubs from around the world, the girls spent a week rowing for the Dundrum Coastal Club against crews from across Europe and North America.

In the U17 Girls final, Anna O’Flaherty, Annie Elliott, Mya Russell, and Maria Cassidy, outclassed their opponents to finish 39 seconds clear. This achievement was all the more remarkable for the fact that Anna and Annie only took up the sport three months ago.

Mya and Maria also won gold in the mixed U17 competition, while Chloe Connor went on to claim two further golds in the U26 Mixed and U26 Female events. Chloe and Maria, along with Sixth Former Erin Elliott, also won silver medals in the U19 race. Erin is also new to the sport, having only taken up rowing three months ago.

Overall, the Shimna girls made a significant contribution as Dundrum Rowing Club was crowned World Champions for the third time in its short history, having only been established in 2014.
