Last weekend, a group of Shimna students in Year 13 took part in a residential trip as part of Empower to Transform. This programme, organised by the YMCA in Newcastle, offers inclusive, group-based and outdoor learning opportunities for Shimna students.
The group spent two nights at Carrowmena Old School House near Limavady, taking part in a range of activities, including catching some waves in a surfing session at Benone. The weekend helped to build confidence and a strong sense of ownership within the group. The surfing session, delivered by Longline Surf School, was a particular success. Instructors Eunan, Kyle and Dan provided a safe, supportive and engaging environment. They developed a strong rapport across the group, which made the experience all the more rewarding.
Other highlights included a yoga session that focused on enjoyment and connection, as well as evening activities such as a movie night, group games and a reflective campfire session.
Overall, the residential was highly successful, supporting wellbeing, helping to builds positive relationships and promoting personal development through an immersive learning experience.
