The winners of the NI Young Economist of the Year competition were announced at Ulster University Belfast Campus on Wednesday 21 January. Organised by NI Schools Hub, all entries were judged by the Ulster University Business School academics, ensuring a fair and anonymous awarding process. Year 13 students Daniel Cutler, Tadhg Kennedy, Ben McNerlin, Matthew Turley and Rory Smith won second place overall across Northern Ireland with their submission on 'Rethinking Public Services: Improving Outcomes Without Increasing Taxation'. It was a tremendous achievement for the boys and a great example of teamwork.

The judging panel stated their project showed “a mature understanding of productivity, value for money and the trade-offs inherent in public sector reform.” All five members of the team were awarded a trophy, a £50 voucher and a two-day work experience with First Derivative. This is an excellent achievement from each member of the team, showcasing their knowledge, understanding and evaluative nature on a complex subject area.

A congratulations must also be extended to overall winners from Sacred Heart Grammar School in Newry and Abbey Christian Brothers' Grammar School in third place.
