Ms Rowell, Head of Biology, writes: “Allan and his Wee Critters visited Shimna yesterday for his much-anticipated annual session, giving our Year 8 students a memorable encounter with real-life biology. The focus of the visit was the variety of life, and Allan certainly brought this theme alive through his engaging delivery and remarkable collection of animals.

Throughout the sessions, students learned about key biological groups including invertebrates and their exoskeletons, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They were introduced to an impressive array of creatures: a giant cockroach, Trevor the toad, a snake, a tarantula, a stunning barn owl and even an armadillo.

Our Year 8s showed great courage and curiosity, with many choosing to hold the animals and asking thoughtful, insightful questions. Allan’s informative and witty approach made the experience both educational and highly enjoyable, leaving students inspired and excited about the natural world.
