Twelve Shimna students from next year’s A Level Mathematics class went on an inspiring two-day visit to the University of Oxford Open Days last week.
Staying in Keble College and Magdalen College, the students were immersed in the unique collegiate atmosphere that makes Oxford one of the most renowned universities in the world. The visit provided them with a unique opportunity to explore university life first-hand, while also helping students to consider future pathways and aspirations.
Over the course of the trip, students visited a number of colleges, including Worcester, Queen’s College, Lincoln, New College, Christ Church and Exeter College where they attended lectures and informal talks, and had the opportunity to speak with admissions staff, current undergraduates and academic staff.
Our students gained valuable insights into courses, the application process and student life, while also discovering some of the distinctive traditions that shape the Oxford experience. From beautiful libraries and stunning lakeside settings to formal dinners, college ‘parents’ and centuries-old customs, students were given a genuine taste of what it means to be part of a college community. They had the privilege of walking the same pathways as generations of world-leading scholars, innovators and leaders, as well as following in the footsteps of former Shimna students who have gone on to study at Oxford.
The group also took time to experience some iconic sights, including the Radcliffe Camera, a river cruise on the Thames with views of the boathouses, Folly Bridge and the historic streets of Oxford city centre. A memorable evening meal at The Ivy was another highlight, with steaks and the famous chocolate bomb dessert among the most popular choices.
The visit was an invaluable opportunity for students to broaden their horizons, experience life at a world-class university and begin thinking about the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.
