On Thursday and Friday, our GCSE Geography classes headed into the wilderness on their GCSE fieldwork - a study of the Shimna River.

Starting at Site 1 near the source, up Ott track, the students split into teams and took measurements for a variety of characteristics including width, depth, velocity and average load size. Afterwards, they headed downstream and took measurements at 3 more sites - along Trassey Road, in Tollymore and then Tipperary Wood.

A final stop at the mouth of the Shimna River included a quick field sketch and a width measurement. The high tide prevented the groups from getting their feet wet - well, even more wet than they already were! It was fantastic to see our students getting stuck in, working really well in groups and enjoying the outdoors. This was the first year in a while the Geographers had soneone game enough to don waders - well done Lauren!

Ms Anderson, Head of Geography, commended the students: “These were two of the best days out in the field we ever have had.”

Thanks to the Geography team and accompanying LSAs for leading the two expeditions.
