More Shimna students come of Bronze Age

Mr Scott writes: “A reflection of the continuing success of the Award in Shimna saw not one but two Bronze Award expeditions take place in June, with 57 students completing their expedition section in the space of a week.
With groups setting off from Clough and Shimna, the local area was awash with adventurers, and all roads (eventually!) led to Tollymore. Some teams took the scenic route, clearly feeling their journey just wasn’t long enough. We won’t mention any names, will we Jack, Letty, Craig, Sylvie, Dylan, Olly and Rhys?!
Once tents were pitched and cooking skills proudly displayed, students got to enjoy the “peace and quiet” of Tollymore. With card games, magic tricks, a bit of football, and even a rather large rendition of Ring-a-ring o’ roses on our second expedition, it was fantastic to see everyone enjoying the craic together.
Day 2 saw a slightly slower start, with plenty of tired faces and sore feet on show… and that was just the staff! But as ever, the students dug deep to complete their expeditions, taking in a range of local sights including Curraghard, Murlough and Tipperary Wood, to name but a few. Groups eventually reached a variety of finish points, including school, Keel Point and Dundrum GAA Club.
Well done to all our participants. You’ve earned your Bronze bragging rights (and that well-deserved post-expedition Chinese!). It also turns out an expedition is much easier when you remember to bring your map, as Sophie and Dara can confirm!”
As ever, a huge thank you to our staff team: Maria Curran, Tom Rodgers, Barry Dagen, Chris Smyth, Catriona O’Neill, Karen Caulfield, plus two new recruits this year, Jools Crory and Mary Donnelly. Thanks also to our assessors, Niamh Lindsay, Campbell Mayers and Stuart Scott.
