Shimna student receives Baroness Blood Award for Community Activism

On the evening of 15 October, we were delighted to welcome Margaret Haugh from Mourne Stimulus in Kilkeel. Margaret delivered the following citation in honour of one of our Year 14 students:

“It is my pleasure this evening to present a special award, given in memory of May Blood, the celebrated campaigner and champion of integrated education. The Award recognises extraordinary young people who do valuable and selfless work in the community.

I am delighted to announce that this year’s recipient is Nicole Curran, a young lady who has given up a lot of her time for our charity, Mourne Stimulus.

Nicole came to us as a young girl looking to do good work for her community and also to improve her skills as part of the Duke of Edinburgh programme. She has come a long way since then. Through her volunteering, Nicole has helped a variety of folk from different walks of life, especially migrant workers and those with various health and social needs. She has formed some very special friendships along the way.

Nowadays, most charities struggle to finance their provision. A large part of our fund-raising comes from our shop. We can also be short of volunteers. It is only for Nicole’s support that we can open on Saturdays – so we are very grateful to her.

And we are not the only beneficiaries of Nicole’s good work. Over the summer, she also volunteered at the Kingdom Youth Club Summer Scheme, helping young people with additional needs, and has continued there on Mondays after school.

The Youth Club sent the following tribute:

“Nicole has displayed a genuine enjoyment working with young people. She is able to connect and communicate with them due to her willingness to engage with them and is patient enough to communicate with them on their own level which is vital in building and maintaining relationships.

Nicole is energetic and unfazed by difficulties which may arise with individual young people.”

It is inspiring to see such a young person giving back to society.

This year’s Baroness Blood Award for Community Activism is Nicole Curran.”
