A fantastic effort from our students yesterday as they took on a treadmill fundraiser in support of Newcastle Lifeboat Service. The students clocked up an incredible 63 miles in our Fitness Suite; the equivalent of setting off from Kilkeel RNLI Lifeboat Station and travelling along the entire County Down coastline, past the lifeboat stations at Newcastle, Ardglass, Portaferry and Bangor, all the way to Donaghadee RNLI Lifeboat Station and beyond. The 2026 Shimna Chess Championships took place earlier today. In a series of matches across multiple year groups, Lucas emerged undefeated through the group stages and knockout rounds to emerge as Grand Master. Well done to Mason, JJ, Luke, Oliver and Ruairi in Year 9 for organising and refereeing the tournament.

On Friday, our girls took part in a 3x3 basketball tournament against St Louis Grammar, with both schools entering three teams. The event provided an excellent opportunity for the students to showcase the skills they have been developing through coaching sessions delivered by Mourne Basketball. Yesterday saw the conclusion of the Looking Ahead Programme for Year 13 and Year 11 students. Yesterday’s sessions provided valuable insights into higher education, career pathways, apprenticeships and personal development, helping students make informed decisions about their futures. This morning, the inaugural Shimna Table Tennis Open took place in our new Sports Hall. It was a great event, with 20 players competing a combination of group and knockout ties, leading through to the trophy and plate finals. With closely fought quarters and semi-finals in both sides of the competition, we were left with four finalists, Reece vs Levon and Darragh vs Robbie, with form classes of the respective players in attendance as spectators. to see what would unfold.
